Gov. Malloy Directs Flags to Half-Staff Thursday for the Anniversary of the Tragedy in Sandy Hook
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is directing U.S. and State of Connecticut flags to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, December 14, 2017, in remembrance of the 20 children and 6 adults who were killed five years ago in the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags – including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise – should also be lowered during this same duration of time.

Gov. Malloy Asks Towns to Partner in Supporting and Fully Funding the Teachers’ Retirement System
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the state budget proposal he will release next week includes a plan to protect the health and viability of the Connecticut State Teachers’ Retirement System – the fund responsible for maintaining retirement benefits for over 36,000 retired and 50,000 active teachers, school administrators, and their beneficiaries. The Governor is proposing several modifications in order to ensure that the state, along with the towns and cities for which they were employed, are able to keep the promises made to teachers who have worked in the public school system without affecting their bottom line.

Gov. Malloy Signs Order Updating Management of State Information Technology Project Policies as Required by Statute

Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Wyman Urge Congress to Reject Concealed Carry Reciprocity Legislation
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman are urging the U.S. House of Representatives to reject the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, which is currently pending before Congress and would allow more dangerous criminals and untrained individuals to carry loaded, hidden guns in public places by forcing states with strong concealed carry laws to honor permits from states with weak or non-existent standards.

Gov. Malloy Introduces Legislation Reforming the Pretrial Justice System to Help Break the Cycle of Crime and Poverty
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he has submitted a legislative proposal to the Connecticut General Assembly that will reform the state’s current methods of detention for people who have only been arrested, but not convicted of any crimes, in order to continue efforts to further reduce the state’s historically low crime rate. The proposed reforms target adults accused of committing nonviolent misdemeanors who are unable to afford bail and – due to no other available options – languish in jail for potentially extended periods of time. In turn, this situation often creates a deteriorating condition where they are unable to earn a paycheck to support themselves and their families, intensifying their economic instability and potentially increasing their inability to lead productive lives within the community.

Gov. Malloy Announces State Grants to Encourage Transit-Oriented Development and Responsible Growth Across Connecticut
Governor Malloy today announced that eleven projects in towns and cities across Connecticut will receive $15 million in funding under a competitive grant program that supports transit-oriented development and responsible growth in the state and is targeted at boosting economic activity and creating jobs.

Gov. Malloy Directs State Agencies to Conduct Review of Sexual Harassment Prevention Procedures
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that – in light of the ongoing, national conversation regarding sexual harassment in the workplace – he has signed an executive order directing the State of Connecticut’s policies and procedures on the topic to be reviewed within all executive branch state agencies to ensure that the state, as an employer, has effective strategies in place and to determine whether there are opportunities for improvement to achieve better outcomes for all employees.

Gov. Malloy Announces Connecticut Opts into FirstNet Network
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced his decision to accept the State of Connecticut into the federal First Responder Network Authority plan to deliver a wireless broadband network to the state’s public safety community. Known as FirstNet, the state-of-the-art technology will connect first responders to a highly secure, wireless broadband network and enhance communications during emergency and disaster response situations.

Gov. Malloy Proclaims Sunday as Japanese-Americans Day of Remembrance
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he has signed a proclamation designating Sunday, February 19, 2017 as Japanese-Americans Day of Remembrance in the State of Connecticut. The recognition honors the victims of Japanese internment camps, which were created exactly 75 years ago this Sunday and resulted in the forcible removal and incarceration of over 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry living in the western coast of the United States during World War II.

Gov. Malloy Announces Dramatic Increase in Unused Prescription Drugs Collected at Drop Boxes During 2016
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the State of Connecticut saw a dramatic increase in the amount of unused prescription medications that residents dropped off at collection boxes during 2016, with the state collecting a total of 33,803 pounds worth of various medications throughout the year. That amounts to a 43 percent increase compared to the amount that residents dropped off in 2015, when 23,651 pounds of unused drugs were collected by the state.
