Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Wyman Applaud House Passage of Bill Protecting Youth from the Destructive Practice of Conversion Therapy
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman are applauding the Connecticut House of Representatives for overwhelmingly voting today to adopt legislation that will protect LGBTQ youth in the state from the destructive practice of conversion therapy. The so-called treatment, which seeks to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, has been discredited by nearly every credible medical and psychiatric group in the country and oftentimes includes destructive practices that are harmful to children, including electric shock therapy.

Gov. Malloy: Economic Impact Study Finds Tourism Contributes $14.7 Billion to Connecticut Economy, Posts Five Straight Years of Job Growth in State
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and the Connecticut Office of Tourism today announced the results of an economic impact study of the tourism industry in Connecticut, showing total direct and indirect business sales supported by the travel industry reached $14.7 billion in 2015 – a 4.6 percent increase since 2013. The study also shows that tourism employment grew 2 percent since 2013 to reach 82,688 jobs in 2015, the fifth straight year of employment growth.

Gov. Malloy Nominates Judges Nina Elgo and Maria Araujo Kahn to Serve on the Appellate Court
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is nominating the Honorable Nina F. Elgo of West Hartford and the Honorable Maria Araujo Kahn of Cheshire to serve as judges on the Connecticut Appellate Court. Should the legislature act favorably on both nominations, this will become the first time in state history that the Appellate Court has been represented by a majority of female judges.

Gov. Malloy Hails House Passage of Legislation Furthering the State’s Efforts to Combat the Opioid Crisis
Governor Dannel P. Malloy is applauding the bipartisan, unanimous vote in the Connecticut House of Representatives this afternoon to approve legislation he introduced earlier this year and developed in cooperation with a number of lawmakers that was designed to further the state’s efforts to combat the opioid crisis. The legislation, which next moves to the State Senate for their consideration, builds upon a series of reforms that Governor Malloy has signed into law on the topic since taking office in 2011.

Governor and Mrs. Malloy to Host ‘Reimagining Justice’ Conference on Criminal Justice Reform on June 14 and 15 in Hartford
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and First Lady Cathy Malloy today announced they will convene a conference in Hartford this summer with criminal justice experts, leaders, and advocates from throughout the country to discuss the progress being made to reform criminal justice systems in the ongoing effort to reduce crime and end the cycle of mass incarceration. Former Senior Advisor to the President of the United States Valerie Jarrett will serve as the event’s keynote speaker, among other notable guest speakers to be announced over the next several weeks.

Gov. Malloy Announces Impact of Trumpcare on Connecticut
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that according to a new analysis of the impact on the State of Connecticut of the Republicans’ American Health Care Act – also known as Trumpcare – healthcare coverage for tens of thousands of state residents could be threatened, and as much as $1 billion in annual costs would be added to the state at full implementation after 2020.

Gov. Malloy Announces Opening of Jobs Training Center for Female Offenders at York Correctional Institution That is Designed to Further Reduce Recidivism
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that as part of his Second Chance Society initiatives, the Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) has opened an American Job Center at York Correctional Institution in Niantic – the state’s only institution for female offenders. The job development program is only the second of its kind in Connecticut and aims to continue reducing the state’s historically low crime rate by providing inmates who are nearing the end of their sentences with the tools needed to become productive members of society upon their release.

Gov. Malloy: New Report Showing Record Drop in Homelessness Confirms State’s Housing Efforts are Working
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today is applauding the results of an annual census of homelessness in the state, saying that the point-in-time count confirms that the state’s recent efforts to reduce homelessness and increase access to housing are working. Conducted by the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness, this year’s census found that homelessness in Connecticut has decreased for a fourth consecutive year and is at its lowest level to date.

Gov. Malloy Introduces Legislation to Prevent the State’s Adult Prisons from Becoming Crime Schools for the Young
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he has submitted a legislative proposal to the Connecticut General Assembly with the goal of further reducing the state’s decreasing crime rate by making a systemic distinction – when appropriate – in how young adults within the justice system are treated in order to provide them with the support services they need to succeed in life instead of being mixed into the adult offender population, which too often can be the first step on a path toward a life of crime.
